Masonite Review: "Wooden Siding - worth the risk?"

Location: Forsyth, GA

Hardboard Satisfaction Rating:
2 of 5 stars Somewhat Unsatisfied

My house has ten-year-old siding and we had to replace about 20% of it when we did some roofing work recently. The problem with the siding was that it was MDF board and when we had a roofing drainage problem, the wood got wet and rotted all along our chimney. We like the look and the price of wooden siding along with the color versatility options. We also learned that a number of lawsuits about MDF have been in the courts. However, I am now very careful to maintain the paint with yearly inspections and touch ups to keep our siding covered with a good protective layer. While I couldn't afford to go to vinyl siding at the time of the required repairs, consistent painting and maintenance should prevent the wear of our product in the future. In addition to paint problems, termites are a worry with wooden siding and the level of worry will depend on the climate in your area. If you are a conscientious inspector of paint jobs, this siding will offer you the opportunity to repaint your home to any color, but it requires vigilance by the owner. I would buy another house with wooden siding, but if I were building, I would likely consider vinyl.
