LP sells its siding products under the name SmartSide® and offers cedar shakes, lap, and panel cladding. These products have the look of traditional wood shakes and siding but come with the advantages of engineered wood including protection against fungal decay and termites.
SmartSide cedar shakes are primed at the factory to provide better paint adhesion and come in four-foot lengths for easy installation. The staggered edges of the individual shake panels make for a more authentic look. The lap siding is made of various widths, with a square or beveled edge, and in a number of styles including wood grain and smooth finish. The panel products are available in reverse board and batten, in cedar grain, or smooth finish.
The Louisiana-Pacific Corporation was founded in 1973 as part of a court-ordered monopoly breakup of lumber giant Georgia-Pacific. High lumber prices in the 1980s drove LP to develop wood products derived from cheaper and faster-growing trees than had been previously used. Using cottonwood and aspen, LP developed an oriented strand board (similar to press board) for use in construction. It then developed proprietary engineered wood for use as siding.
The company headquarters were moved from Portland, Oregon to Nashville, Tennessee in 2004. The company operates manufacturing facilities in the United States, Canada, and South America. LP employs 5,100 people and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under LPX.
LP offers a 50-year prorated, limited warranty on its SmartSide siding products for the homeowner and one subsequent owner of the home. The coverage protects the homeowner in case of the following: fungal degradation, buckling, cracking, peeling, separating, chipping, flaking, and rupturing. A separate 5-year warranty covers the finish against many of these same conditions.
